Competitive Rugby Season Start Delayed
17 Aug 2026Competitive Rugby Season Start Delayed
Following an announcement from the Rugby Football Union (RFU), the start of competitive community rugby in England has been delayed until the week commencing 21 September 2026.
The decision has been made following concerns around current pitch conditions, with the prolonged dry weather resulting in hard and dry playing surfaces and an increased risk to player welfare. Read the full RFU announcement
For Oundle RFC, this means the league campaigns for a number of our teams will now begin later than originally scheduled.
What does this mean for Oundle?
The following Oundle teams are affected by the announcement:
2nd XV
1976
Colts
Women's XV
Their respective league fixtures scheduled before the revised start date will no longer go ahead as originally planned, with fixtures rearranged accordingly.
However, rugby at Oundle certainly hasn't stopped. Some of our teams have already arranged friendlies during this period, providing the opportunity for players to continue training and playing while we wait for competitive rugby to resume.
Our team pages have now been updated with the latest fixture information, including rearranged friendlies where applicable. Head to your team's page to see the current schedule.
And the 1st XV?
At present, there is no change to the 1st XV fixture schedule.
As our 1st XV competes in National 2, they currently sit outside the community competitions covered by the RFU's announcement. Their scheduled fixtures therefore remain unchanged for the time being.
We are, however, continuing to monitor the situation closely and will provide an update should there be any changes.
What's next?
We'll continue to share updates as the situation develops and any further fixture changes are confirmed.
In the meantime, preparations for the new season continue across the club, with our players and coaches working hard ahead of what promises to be another exciting year at Oundle RFC.
Thank you for your continued support. We can't wait to get back out on there!
